Slippery floor fines

If you are a business owner you should already know that it is the company’s responsibility to ensure the health and safety of its employees.

Real Decreto 486/1997, of 14 April, establishes the minimum health and safety provisions for workplaces, among which we find:

  • Adequate measures must be taken for the protection of workers authorised to access work areas where safety may be affected by the risk of falling.
  • It establishes regulations for ramps, fixed ladders and service ladders, stating that these must be made of non-slip materials or have anti-slip elements.

It also establishes cleaning and maintenance rules in which the company must carry out periodic cleaning and maintenance tasks in order to maintain adequate hygienic and functional conditions.

Infringements in the area of occupational risk prevention will be sanctioned according to three levels of seriousness:

  • Minor, with a fine of 40 to 405 €.
  • In its medium degree, from 406 to 815 €.
  • In its maximum degree, from 816 to 2.045 €.

The inspector will determine the level of the fine and the infringement.

The use of anti-slip mats will keep work areas safe, keep floors clean and dry and reduce the risk of slipping and falling.
